How does LED Light Therapy work?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. In the 1980s, NASA scientists discovered that LEDs stimulate plant growth and subsequently found they have the same effect on skin, stimulating mitochondria (cell fuel) and boosting our collagen production.

The treatment works by emitting lights in different wavelengths/spectrums, each of which have different skincare benefits. The blue light helps to kill off bacteria (such as that which causes acne), the red light helps stimulate circulation and healing, while the infrared light targets deeper cell layers and is used to treat wrinkles, sagging skin and more. White light penetrates the deepest and is used to tighten the skin and reduce inflammation.

During LED therapy at Retreat, our device will send light waves deep into the skin, which will trigger natural intracellular reactions. Different light wavelengths will be used to target your particular skin concerns, all without causing any damage to your skin.

What can LED Light Therapy be used to treat?
LED light therapy can be used to improve the appearance of a range of skin conditions including:
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Sagging skin
  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Facial scars

Skin Rejuvenation with Red Light Therapy

Red light is effective as a skin rejuvenation treatment, improving blood flow and increasing collagen production. It can also be beneficial in calming the inflammation linked to acne, pigmentation and rosacea.

Improve the Appearance of Acne with Blue Light Therapy

Blue light wave lengths have powerful anti-bacterial properties that cleanse and purify the skin, killing the bad bacteria that causes spots and acne. Blue light also has anti-spasmodic properties that relieve tension.

Oily & Dry Combination Skin Treatments with Violet LED Light

Combination skin which may have oily and dry areas, reacts well to violet light. Red and blue lights have very specific wavelengths and, when used together, kill acne bacteria and help the skin to heal.

Reduce Age Spots, Uneven Pigmentation & Sun Damage with Green Light Therapy

Green light effectively targets dark circles, uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries and sunspots, while also calming sensitive, irritated or over-stimulated skin.

Your LED Light Therapy Treatment at Retreat Clinic

After a thorough consultation and before treatment commences, your face will be thoroughly cleansed. During treatment, goggles and eye protectors must be worn (as the light is quite bright- like soaking up intense sun on a beach).

The LEDs themselves are set in a grid and suspended on an arm a short distance from your face during the treatment. The machine used is compact and quiet and many people find the colourful lights and warmth of the rays very relaxing.

Your LED Therapy can be booked either as a stand alone treatment or as an add-on to other treatments such as dermaplaning, microneedling, microdermabrasion or any of our facials.

Is LED Light Therapy for me?

LED Therapy can benefit most people who want to treat scars, fight acne, reduce uneven pigmentation, wrinkles or just generally make their skin look younger and healthier.

Those whose skin is prone to photosensitivity may want to avoid LED light therapy, in case the exposure triggers a reaction. Similarly, those who suffer from epilepsy or porphyria may want to check with your Retreat Clinic beauty therapist before booking a session. It is also recommended that mothers-to-be get permission from their doctor before undergoing LED light therapy.
